Welcome to SWC.
I started
woodturning about 6 years ago I built myself a nice workshop, which measures
14ft x6’6” x 7ft high . I bought the timber from a reclaim yard near Whitby
had it delivered and, total cost with all my electrics and alarm system put
in by professional people, it cost around, £450 pounds and I spend many
hours out there . My older brother Fred use to sit and watch me turning
bowls, making clocks, and he was even more amazed when I started to produce
pens, but eighteen months after it was built my brother Fred became Ill, and
then passed away, it took me nearly 3 years to get back down and get started
again, I just could not bring myself to go down without Fred being there,
and asking questions about the piece that I might be turning or polishing.
but now I have started, I think that I’ll soon get back into the swing of
things. Sometimes get so carried away I forget the time, but after many late
nights, and aching limbs, when you see the end product you know it was worth
it. One day I hope to get a lot of my work together and exhibit in a local
craft fair, in the meantime I'll just keep on turning away. As I live not
far from the beach in Whitby I like two get down after a storm or very rough
seas and see what drift wood has been washed up. See in photo's. I
find it very interesting to scramble over the rocks under the main cliff,
and have a good sort out of the logs and branches that have been washed up,
and see what may be suitable for turning once it has dried out, sometimes I
finish up with a lot of firewood after a few months, because it splits too
bad to use.
