Hello and Welcome to SWC

I make clocks, bowls, pens and other wooden turned items inc:memorial for people & pets.   From wood sourced locally from sustainably managed forests.

I started wood turning over 12 years ago. I built myself a workshop from useing reclaimed timber from a local reclaim yard I worked out the size that I wanted and what timber I would need and went to get it priced up.

I got enough timber to do floor joist, floor boards, frame work, sides roof joist and main roof delivered to my door for £250.00 when it arrived my brother Fred, wife Joan and I set to and de-nailed the floorboards. It  did not take long to get floor down, frames made boarded and stood up in place and bolted together, waiting for the roof to be fixed.

The workshop was finished, totally finished with electrics and alarmed in two weeks at a total cost of £460.00.

Last year the old floor boarding used on the sides had started to deteriorate, so I treated it well with at lot of old garden fence paint and then bought a load of decking and after treating it both sides of it, started cutting it to size I then fitted it all the way around the outside
of my workshop with screws and I set each piece on a bed of mastic to keep bugs and the weather out of any gaps.

I need get a new door sorted for my workshop, I have been given a mahogany door by a friend but have not got around to fitting it yet it's a bit on the heavy side so I have to wait until my friend locally has time to give me a lift with it.  I've have bit of trouble with my roof lately what I need to do is get some lumps of tar, so that I can melt it down and maybe, that will keep the water out, we get so many strong  winds sometimes up to 80mph and no matter what I do I can't seem to keep felt on the roof. This time it's happened big-time not just the felt, But two of the four  8x4 sheets of ply 3/4 " thick lifted right off in spite of being nailed with 4" nails.

I managed after a struggle once the wind calmed down, to lift the boards off of the roof De-nail them, and nail them back down hopefully it will stay waterproof until the spring and god willing I have the health and strength to stripe the lot back and re-board and felt it again, unless in the meantime I can find someone reliable, and reasonable enough priced with a hot-pot to do a proper job.

I think that I might enquire about having the whole lot re-boarded and fibre glassed over, but it won't be cheap but when you have good tools like I have, there not cheap either so it's got to be worth putting a decent finish on your roof.

Had a quote from a local builder today to fix my workshop roof but I think he is having a laugh, he quoted me £940.00 + VAT for
4 sheets of ply and two rolls of felt and a tin of sticky tar, and then of course there wages.

I have fixed my workshop roof myself, with some  help from a friend we striped the old  ply boards off , and put two complete coverings of felt over the original boarded roof, and then finishing with two good coats of waterproof black pitchumastic paint if water get through now, well I think I'll give up.

The whole job has cost £87.61 including Materials and labour, as for the Mahogany door that my friend gave me that just cost me the price of a couple of beers in exchange for a lift as the old that I took off was heavy, so was the Mahogany one that went on plus we had to make a few adjustments to the hinges,  it fits well, and I put a new five lever lock on and the old handles, a couple of nice coats of Mahogany wood treatment and it looks great. Pictures on gallery soon.
